The Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Myanmar ISIS) was first established in July 1992 by the State Law and Order Restoration Council of Myanmar with the then Minister for Foreign Affairs as its chairman. It participated in various meetings, seminars, workshops and roundtable discussions organized by other institutes of international studies or think tanks in Asia and beyond. To be in compatible with the changing situation in the country after the end of the military rule, Myanmar ISIS was reconstituted in 2013 as instructed by the then President of the country. It has been chaired by a retired career Ambassador since then and now has 15 members, including some retired ambassadors, prominent scholars and retired senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Myanmar ISIS is an academic institute concerned with the study of international relations and foreign policy issue areas. It is also concerned with strategic studies and research on current regional and international issues. Myanmar ISIS contributes timely inputs, views and recommendations for the formulation of policies and decisions on bilateral, multilateral and regional issues with the aim of serving Myanmar’s national interest while enhancing peace, friendship and cooperation with other countries. Another area of importance is to project Myanmar’s true image and promote better understanding of it by the world on its stands, policies and actions on issues related to Myanmar.

Myanmar ISIS is a member of the Network of East Asia Think Tanks (NEAT) and also a member of the ASEAN ISIS network.
