The Second GCMS Think Tank Forum Held in Vientiane

On March 22, the Second Think Tank Forum of the Global Center for Mekong Studies (GCMS) was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Dr. Rong Ying, Vice President of China Institute of International Studies (CIIS) and Director of GCMS China Center, and Amb. Khamsouay Keodalavong, Director-General of Institute of Foreign Affairs, Lao PDR and Director of GCMS Laos Center delivered the opening remarks. Mdm. Khamphao Ernthavanh, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR gave the keynote speech.

More than 40 representatives from GCMS Cambodia Center, GCMS China Center, GCMS Laos Center, GCMS Myanmar Center, GCMS Thailand Center, GCMS Vietnam Center, other ASEAN countries, the Mekong Institute (MI), Mekong River Commission (MRC) and the Greater Mekong Sub-regional Cooperation (GMS) attended the meeting.

Themed with “Strengthening Cooperation and Partnership Towards Jointly Building a Lancang-Mekong Community of Shared Future”, the forum had in-depth discussion on pathway towards an open and inclusive Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) and approaches to jointly building a LMC Economic Development Belt.

The GCMS serves as a significant platform for Lancang-Mekong think tank cooperation. The six GCMS national centers expressed their willingness to enhance cooperation, give full play to their respective strengths and complement each other, and strengthen linkages with other regional mechanisms so as to jointly promote the stable development of LMC.
